This position will be in support of the Deployment Associated Infections Division, Operationally Relevant Infections Department at the Naval Medical Research Command to provide scientific support to the Immunology Branch. The Immunology Branch performs research and leads development of preclinical enteric animal models to serve as tools for combatting antimicrobial resistant enteric infections, as well as supports a number of products under clinical evaluation. As a member of the Deployment Associated Infections Division, the incumbent will work directly under the programmatic and scientific supervision of the principal investigators (Drs Renee Laird and Frederic Poly) to develop, conduct and manage research projects targeting interventions like vaccines and immunoprophylactic products for the prevention of diarrhea caused by bacterial enteropathogens including ETEC, Campylobacter jejuni, EAEC and Shigella spp. The candidate will investigate the feasibility of applying a wide variety of immunological and microbiological scientific principles and concepts to products under development.
 
HJF is seeking a Postdoctoral Fellow is Responsible for initiating and carrying out research projects in collaboration with a research team. Pursuits research along a focused line of inquiry and has a manuscript in development.

Responsibilities
  • Providing technical expertise in the areas of immunology and preclinical mouse studies.
  • Leads and performs enteric infection challenge studies in mice.
  • Performs cellular and humoral immunology assays to characterize responses to vaccination, infection and product treatment in animal and human specimens to include ELISA, ELISPOT and T cell and B cell multiparametric flow cytometry.
  • Develops new technologies and protocols. Demonstrates expertise and applies independent judgement and expert knowledge in performing pre-clinical and clinical studies. Exhibits strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Plan, processes and interprets experimental data. Formulates experimental hypotheses and designs experimental protocols. Analyzes and interprets data.
  • Collects and handles samples. Makes scientific observations, maintains detailed workbooks/documentation, and ensures documentation fulfills generally accepted professional/industry standards. Maintains clear and accurate laboratory records, inventories and logbooks. Performs data entry for research projects and maintains databases.
  • Interacts and communicates with colleagues and collaborators. Coordinates with other technical and professional staff.
  • Assists with the preparation of data for presentations at scientific meetings and for publication in journals. Writes technical reports, summaries and protocols.
  • Coordinates and contributes to new grant and funding applications.
  • May train and supervise technical staff.
  • May perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned or directed by the supervisor. This may include attendance of and participation in required training for role.
 
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  • Knowledge of appropriate scientific area; ability to analyze and interpret data.
  • Knowledge of applicable complex scientific procedures and techniques.
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • Ability to troubleshoot technical procedures.
  • Ability to work independently and may supervise others.

Education and Experience
  • Doctoral degree 
  • Minimum of 0-5 years experience required.
